The Royal Society comments on the Science and Technology Select Committee report – A time for boldness: EU membership and UK science after the referendum

20 December 2016

A Royal Society spokesperson said:

“The Select Committee has rightly highlighted that the UK’s outstanding performance in science depends on our ability to attract the world’s most talented researchers. We must continue to be open to people, skills and ideas from across Europe and the world.

“It is vital for government and the science community to work together to address any barriers to mobility, enhance our competitiveness and send a strong message that the UK will always welcome highly skilled international talent.

“We are also pleased to see that the Select Committee has recognised the value of research funding such as the Newton Fund and the Global Challenges Research Fund. As well as supporting outstanding science these schemes foster international collaboration.”
